Alberto Contador believes Tadej Pogacar can win Giro d'Italia and Tour de France: "If he wins both, he should try to make history and try to win Vuelta"

Alberto Contador is one of the riders who, in modern cycling, has attempted and came the closest to winning the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France. This monumental task will not be attempted by Tadej Pogacar this year and 'El Pistolero' believes he can certainly pull it off.

"We have Pogačar and Vingegaard, who both have two wins. But we will see how Vingegaard will be after the ugly crash. It is their duels and then also the rivalry between van Aert and van der Poel that are the reasons why cycling is worth watching," Contador said in an interview with Ceska Televize. After recent comments from all over social media that cycling is far from it's most exciting phase with such dominant figures, Contador defends that their performances continue to push the sport forward.

However, Contador is very confident that there is the chance to go even higher. Pogacar is the main favourite to win the Giro d'Italia; and it has to be said that his chances of winning the Tour de France significantly improved after Jonas Vingegaard was seriously injured in a crash at Itzulia Basque Country, where Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic also crashed and suffered injuries. UAE Team Emirates will be supporting the Slovenian in an attempt to be the first rider in decades to succeed.

"He can definitely do it. I hardly see a rival for him at the Giro, and at the Tour the question is whether and in what form Vingegaard will arrive," Contador argues. But more could even be possible: "But I want to emphasize one thing, if he wins both, he should try to make history and try to win Vuelta. They start very young and it's really crazy to endure that hard work for maybe twenty years."
