Expressing his vision, he explains where Aevolo completes the puzzle. "So in order to correct that, I felt like we needed an in-house U23 developmental team so that there is a direct, visible, tangible line all the way from when you’re a 14-year-old talent to becoming a WorldTour rider."
"And Aevolo is the obvious team to do this with," Vaughters thinks. "It’s a sister team in the sense that they’ve been with Cannondale for quite awhile and obviously the team has done a great job. But to make that next jump in performance, they needed to have a more international program and to have a foundation with a WorldTour team."
It is expected the team will welcome a mix of American and European talent, while few selected Japanese riders are also expected to make it onto the 2025 lineup.
Aevolo
The history of Aevolo goes back to 2017 when the team entered the Continental scene with ambitious project aiming to develop (North) American U23 (and U19) riders before their step up to World Tour. The team didn't extend their license for 2022 yet it continued to work under the radar.
Among Aevolo's graduates is Israel - Premier Tech's star
Riley Sheehan or former pros Gage Hecht, Tyler Stites, Scott McGill, Charles-Etienne Chrétien, Jared Scott and the infamous
Luis Villalobos. Sheehan is having a dream year that started with a surprise Paris-Tours victory last October. This season Sheehan quickly established himself as a top rider for classics with 13th place at Flanders and podium of
Eschborn-Frankfurt.
Whether any riders from Aevolo's 2023 lineup will continue in 2025 remains to be seen as EF will certainly want to push the level up a notch. Perhaps the most interesting name at the current roster is team's climber Ian López de San Roman. The third year as runner-up in last stage of recent Tour of the Gila.
Vaughters already started a cooperation with U19/U17 project ONTO in 2023 officially to support the development of American youth. However rumours speak of Vaughters' immense interest in just 16-year-old Ashlin Barry.
The American born in Girona who represented Canada in youth categories is seen as one of the most promsing riders born in 2007 and is expected to turn pro in either 2026 or 2027 with EF Education-EasyPost.
In his first year as junior, Barry's arrival to Europe was one of the long-awaited events of early 2024. And in that regard, the talented American didn't disappoint by winning two stages (plus one GC) in his first two races. Boosted by confidence from his spring camapign, Barry returned to States to become
double American champion.
