The Down Under Classic was the first race of the season for the international World Tour peloton but unfortunately it was not only a short and joyful first day for the 2025 year. There was a massive crash in the final corner of the race and not only riders were injured, but a spectator also had to be hospitalized following the impactful collision.
The race had only just over 50 kilometers in distance, in the format of a criterium where the speeds were high and the need for good bike handling skills was required to battle for the win. It just so happens that the final corner was only a few hundred meters away from the finish line, and the corner was taken at very high speeds with a lot of proximity between riders.
A fall took place, and due to the speeds a few riders were unable to avoid hitting the barriers. In a fan-recorded video, it was possible to see a few spectators on the other side of the barriers were knocked down due to the impact. It wasn't inconsequential, as one woman had to be taken to the hospital.
Race organizers have issued a statement following the race: "Sadly, as a result of the collision, a female spectator suffered injuries and was taken to hospital, where she is currently being treated. We are in contact with the spectator's family and have offered our support."
Peter Malinauskas, South Astralia state Premier, also adressed the incident that gathered quite a lot of attention on the local news: "Tragically last night we did see a significant accident occur at the TDU, where cyclists went into spectator. It's saddening to report a woman has suffered multiple serious injuries." The men's Tour Down Under will start in a matter of days, where there will be a rather similar finale in the city of Adelaide where a lot of tension could potentially emerge after this fall.
