Tim Merlier on stage 12 of the 2026 Tour de France
Stage 2 of the Tour of Britain was a day for the sprinters and whilst the crosswinds did some damage, the finale could not prevent the fast men from battling for the win. Tim Merlier took the victory for Soudal - Quick-Step as the main favourite for the stage.
The stage began in the town of Boston and was a day that was expected to feature the sprinters. Lucas Bénéteau, Axel Källberg, Jonah Killy and János Pelikán formed the group at the front, although the peloton kept them at bay.
Crosswinds then began splitting the race apart, with 60 kilometers to go Filippo Ganna suffered a punctured and was dropped whilst the race broke apart - and he ultimately lost time. UAE Team Emirates - XRG did a lot of the work at the front to put their rivals under pressure, although ultimately those efforts remained largely unrewarded.

UAE try to attack, but Merlier succeeds

With 7 kilometers to go Florian Vermeersch launched an attack and tried to play it for the overall classification, but there were too many interests behind. Vermeersch was caught just outside the final kilometer, with Modern Adventure Pro Cycling having several riders towards the front alongside Decathlon in the final high-speed finale.
Jasper Stuyven led the sprint out from early on, opening way for Tim Merlier who, in the final straight, managed to go into the front on the final straight.
