Former professional cyclist
Rohan Dennis has been arrested by South Australian police for allegedly driving while serving a five-year driving ban. According to Australian broadcaster ABC, the vehicle Dennis was driving has been impounded, and he is expected to appear before a judge.
Dennis, now 36, was reportedly stopped by police on Thursday afternoon while driving with his two children in the car. Officers subsequently seized the vehicle. The former cyclist's driving privileges were revoked following legal proceedings related to the death of his wife, former Australian track cyclist Melissa Hoskins, in December 2023.
Prosecutors initially charged Dennis with dangerous driving causing death and driving without due care. However, he was ultimately not held criminally responsible for Hoskins' death. Dennis did plead guilty to a lesser charge of creating a likelihood of harm.
Rohan Dennis in time trial mode
During his cycling career, Dennis established himself as one of the world's premier time trial specialists. He won back-to-back UCI World Championship titles in the individual time trial in 2018 and 2019 and claimed Olympic medals for Australia on the track. He also enjoyed success at Grand Tours, winning time trial stages at all three major races - the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta a España - while riding for teams including BMC, Bahrain-Merida, and INEOS Grenadiers.
Jail time back on the table?
The two-time world time trial champion faced a potential prison sentence of up to seven years. However, in May 2025, he received a suspended sentence of nearly 17 months, along with a two-year probation period. The sentence was reduced by ten months after he entered a guilty plea. In addition, his driver's licence was revoked for five years.
It remains unclear whether this latest arrest could affect the terms of Dennis's suspended sentence.
