Laura Verdonschot, the 28-year-old cyclocross rider from
Lommel, Belgium, has received difficult news regarding her health. The rider
will soon undergo surgery to address a narrowing in both her groin arteries, a
condition that has been causing her significant physical challenges.
“We got the bad news on Friday,”
explained her team manager,
Camiel van den Bergh to Sporza. “Laura's inguinal arteries are almost blocked and she
needs surgery.”
Despite the diagnosis, Verdonschot has decided to compete in
the Belgian cyclocross Championship next Saturday, riding for her fans and her team. Van
den Bergh acknowledged the emotional weight of the situation, saying, “Laura
will still ride the Belgian Championship for her fans and for the team. We are
all relieved that we know what is wrong, but for Laura this is very hard.”
When asked about her chances at the championship, Van den
Bergh admitted the uphill battle Verdonschot faces. “Is winning the Belgian
Championship out of the question? Everything would have to go well for the
victory, because the acidification is so great due to the lack of blood
circulation. Then you cannot defend your chances.”
Verdonschot shared her feelings about the situation in an
emotional Instagram post. “I've fought for everything I've reached until now
& will lose everything I've fought for so long. I will race the national
champs out of respect for my entourage - sponsors & supporters although
this will be an emotional day.”
Looking ahead, Verdonschot is determined to come back
stronger. “I will be back next year with 2 pair of fresh legs, but for now the
only thing I feel is disappointment,” she concluded.
