At the 2024
Giro d'Italia, the startlist features riders who are both younger and older than the 2023 edition. We've got 20 and 41 year olds in the same peloton this year; and surprisingly both youngest and oldest will be teammates this month.
In the young side we've got Giro debutant
Giulio Pellizzari of VF Group - Bardiani CSF - Fainzanè. He and Madis Mihkels are the only 20-year olds starting the Corsa Rosa. The Top10 does however feature immensely talented rider such as Cian Uijtdebroeks, Tobias Lund Andresen and Laurence Pithie who should be in the mix for stage wins throughout the three weeks.
On the opposite side of the spectrum, Pellizzari's teammate
Domenico Pozzovivo is the oldest rider in the race. The veteran begins his record-matching 18th Giro at 41 years of age and is still expected to be a factor in the mountains. He was already the oldest last year, but this time around he is over three years older than his closest competitor Simon Geschke who is the only 38-year old. As with the youngsters, the Top10 also features very important riders such as Geraint Thomas and Damiano Caruso who will be contenders for the overall classification and both have finished in the podium in reecent years.
One day, we might even see father and son in a race at this level :-)
To go back to another topic, young replacing old. We see there are 9 riders all within a year of each other and one a good bit younger.
If this becomes the case every year, it won’t take long until there are almost no 35/36y olds left to replace.
41 yrs and 156 days old, is considered an "oldie" to be fair. Never mind a "veteran"! He's in similar age group with Alejandro Valverde, who happens in the late 30's-40's age group
It is incredibly that Pozzovivo is still racing at this point. Remember seeing him win a stage in 2012 and it felt like he was already a veteran by then!
