Wout van Aert crashed on the 16th stage of the Vuelta a España, suffering a deep wound in the knee in a crash that would end his season - his second large fall of the season. He was riding in the lead of the points and KOM classification lead when he fell, and it took him 31 days to get back on the bike.
After the fall, which took place in the day where the peloton finished atop the Lagos de Covadonga, van Aert was very disappointed in a season marked by his other fall at Dwars door Vlaanderen that completely changed his plans. No cobbled classic monuments, no Giro d'Italia; and then no World Championships after this crash...
Van Aert needed to stay in the hospital for several days in Spain before returning to Belgium, where he continued to be treated in Herentals, where he also lives. This Friday morning he took a big step in his recovery, taking on an hour-long around ride around the town which officially marks his return to the bike. He will not race on the road this season, but is expected to make a return in the winter to cyclocross.
