Heading into that tricky final third of the race, two riders were out in front of the peloton, Sergio Samitier (Movistar Team) and Julien Simon (TotalEnergies).
After an unlucky puncture however, Simon was left behind by his breakaway companion and soon swallowed up by the peloton, leaving only Samitier out front.
With just under 40km to go, Samitier himself was caught and the peloton was once again at the front of the race.
When UAE Team Emirates's Tim Wellens took to the front of the bunch, the race began to rip apart. After a massive turn from Wellens,
Brandon McNulty picked up where his teammate had left off causing even more damage.
At 10km to go, McNulty, Nils Politt and Yves Lampaert held a 16-second advantage over a peloton that had begun to reform after the destructive attack of UAE Team Emirates.
Although the peloton were creeping, the leading trio maintained an 8-second lead into the final 3km meaning it was by no means a done deal.
2km to go and it was down to 7 seconds as the trio continued to bravely hold off the bunch.
Into the final kilometre and McNulty launched an attack but Mads Pedersen, attacking from the peloton made a one-man chase to catch and pinch it at the very last.
