One of the most multi-faceted riders around today, Tom Pidcock has shown his capabilities to win big races in various disciplines. As such, the list of career goals that the 24-year-old hasn't yet added to his palmares isn't too long.
“I’m 24. I’ve won Strade Bianche, Amstel Gold Race, a stage of the Tour de France, I’m Olympic champion, a world champion in cyclocross and on the mountain bike," the INEOS Grenadiers star reels off his list of accomplishments via the PA news agency. “If I can win a Monument or the worlds on the road, even if I’m just on the podium in the Tour, that’s a career that no one else has been able to have.”
If Pidcock is to achieve a podium at the Tour de France however, it's likely the Brit will have to take a step back from his multi-discipline schedule and focus fully on his GC preparation, although that train of thought isn't something he completely agrees with. “I think anything that wasn’t my choice would be detrimental to me as a bike rider. I don’t do anything well that I don’t enjoy," he explains. “The road incorporates many different types of riders. I want to do well on the road. I see myself as a road rider, but if you really had to say what sort of rider I am, it’s mountain bike. It’s the one I enjoy without fail.”
“I could never see myself winning five back-to-back Tours or anything like that,” Pidcock concludes honestly. “I need fresh things. If I won everything once, that’s better than a lot of a few things.”
