Few riders in the modern peloton have been as loyal and long-serving for one team as the experienced Italian workhorse Salvatore Puccio has been for Team Sky / INEOS Grenadiers over his last 14 seasons at the British-based. Over that time, the now 35-year-old has seen the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

"In the last two years we have dropped in level, it is undeniable," admits Puccio in conversation with Bici Pro ahead of his 15th season at the team in 2025. Despite the recent difficulties, Puccio is also optimistic for the year ahead. "This winter we have moved well: new coaches, new collaborations, the arrival of the Development Team. For me these are encouraging signs."

"It is true, after many years of success we found ourselves doing the same things. Change was necessary and stimulating. I do not want to blame anyone, but now we will see how it goes. The important thing is to believe in what you do and this gives motivation," Puccio continues. "In 12-13 years we have won everywhere. It is normal for there to be declines, as happens in football or Formula 1. For years the others have chased us, now there are other teams at the top. We will see how long they will last, however."

In terms of his goals for the coming season, proud Italian Puccio is targeting an 11th appearance at the Giro d'Italia. " I already have an idea of what I'll have to do, although with the probable cancellation of the Valenciana (due to recent floods, ed.) there could be some changes in the first part of the season. I should race in Spain and then in France. We'll see... The main goal of the year is the Giro d'Italia," he explains. "I'd like to get there in good shape, because in this team experience isn't enough: you have to earn your place."

Heading into the final year of his INEOS Grenadiers contract, the 35-year-old is also contemplating the end of his career. "We'll see how this season goes. You'll be able to understand a lot from the first part: my legs, my morale, my desire. If it goes well, I could continue," he concludes. "I don't want to drag myself on my bike. I've always had a specific role, at the service of important captains, and I've always tried to be at the top. That's why I want to be competitive: that's the main goal for next year."
