Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team are achieving a victory at the Vuelta a Espana this Sunday with their new Belgian superstar Remco Evenepoel, who has completed a journey of many obstacles towards his maiden Grand Tour win.
“Even me he has surprised with the speed at which he is growing. But that's a sign of the great champions. After Liège-Bastogne-Liège, he clicked," Lefevere told Het Nieuwsblad. This marks a very big achievement for Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team, as Lefevere managed the team into his first Grand Tour win. “It was always said that Quick-Step was the greatest classic team, but we have already finished second here with Enric Mas and in 2014 we also finished second in the Giro with Rigoberto Uran.”
The win comes after three weeks of consistent racing. Despite several setbacks for the Belgian team, Evenepoel has performed at a very high level throughout the mountains of the race, and will be riding into Madrid in red after a very convincing performance. “I am very pleased because there are many people, especially in Flanders, who are always complaining and being negative about him. That he can't do this and that".
"And now… Niki Terpstra always says 'when you win, you have friends'. That I have many friends today? I choose my friends myself," he commented.
“Hopefully this is the start of something formidable. Many people have not experienced that last Belgian overall victory of 44 years ago. I was already there then, because I rode with Van Impe, Merckx, Maertens and De Muynck. And we've only just begun. Now we will quietly return to the hotel. We will definitely have a drink, but the real party isn't until Sunday," he concluded. Madrid will be painted red today, and at the head of the celebrations will be the Belgian team.
