Vuelta a Espana 2026 Classifications Update Stage 16 - Van Aert and Buitrago look set for victory, Enric Mas retains red as the peloton enters the final week

The first red jersey of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana will be decided immediately in Monaco, where a 9.4-kilometre individual time trial opens a race featuring more than 58,000 metres of climbing, repeated summit finishes and a second race against the clock later in the final week.
This live classifications hub will be updated after every stage with the latest General Classification, Points Classification, Mountains Classification and Best Young Rider standings, tracking the fight for the red, green, polka-dot and white jerseys from Stage 1 on August 22 through to the final stage in Granada on September 13.
The overall battle will be shaped by repeated opportunities for the climbers, from the early Pyrenean and Andorran tests to Calar Alto, Sierra de la Pandera, Penas Blancas and the decisive Collado del Alguacil. The two individual time trials and bonus seconds provide further chances for the gaps between the main contenders to change.
Sprint finishes and intermediate sprints will drive the points competition, breakaways can quickly transform the mountains standings and the white jersey will develop alongside many of the same stages that decide the general classification. Each update will show the latest standings after the day's racing and highlight the important changes across all four competitions.

General Classification Standings after Stage 16
The overall classification had a 'rest day', as the GC riders were able to remain calm and mostly out of danger in the peloton. This means that after stage 16, Enric Mas was able to maintain his gap of 2:06 minutes over Felix Gall, with Primoz Roglic sitting only four seconds behind in third place.
Richard Carapaz, Oscar Onley, Jakob Omrzel, Mattias Skjelmose, Cristian Rodríguez, Clément Berthet and Sepp Kuss complete the Top10.

Points Classification Standings after Stage 16
Wout Van Aert, despite being a leadout for Matthew Brennan, sprinted to sixth on today's stage, and managed to safely maintain the lead of the points classification. This one is also virtually sealed, with Matthew Brennan closing the gap somewhat due to today's stage win.

King of the Mountains Classification Standings after Stage 16
Without a single KOM points being distributed this Tuesday afternoon, the standings remain as they were at the start of the stage. Santiago Buitrago remains in the lead and his victory is rather certain if he manages to win the race. His 60 points are vastly above Wout Van Aert's 40 whilst the final days of the race should benefit the Colombian.

The youth classification remains in the hands of Oscar Onley. The Netcompany INEOS rider continues to only hold 30 seconds of lead over Jakob Omrzel, leaving the battle wide open for the final days of the race.

Decathlon CMA CGM Team remain in the lead of the teams' classification, something that is unlikely to change over the coming days as this lead is of almost a whole hour. The standings did not change during today's bunch sprint.

Their superstar has 2 stages and the points jersey. According to the listing here (which no-one so far has called out for being wrong or incomplete, I’m not going to check), by my calculations we are at 11200CHF after 15 stages, 8 of them had zero, there is only doubt about stages 8 and 11 but it won’t make much difference.
