The Frenchman finished his season at the Tour of Guangxi with a third place in the overall classification, beaten only by Jarno Widar and Tom Pidcock on the queen stage into Nongla. "I absolutely didn't want to end the season on a bad note, or give up without even trying," Barré said in words to
DirectVelo.
"That would have really bothered me. But I gave it a go, I made my comeback, and even though it wasn't ideal, a podium finish in the general classification of a WorldTour stage race is fantastic."
Louis Barré was one of Visma's most successful signings of the winter
Two wins and a big year for Barré
Barré year started off on the wrong foot, as
symptoms of Long Covid have forced his season to only virtually begin in May. The Frenchman competed twice in February but was unable to finish neither race; and only in May did he complete his first race day with the 'bees'.
By the time the riders got to August, Barré was firing all cylinders. He won a stage at the Tour de Pologne - his first as a professional - and was a headliner, finishing fourth in the overall classification. He then backed that up with another win at the Deutschland Tour, where only Isaac del Toro was able to beat him in the overall classification. His performance in Guangxi wrapped up a roller-coaster season.
"It was a truly strange year. But I realized that when I have the time to train without any setbacks, I’m capable of performing at a world-class level in efforts lasting 15 to 20 minutes. That’s a huge motivation for next year," he added.
A wrist fracture suffered in September kept him off the World Championships, but he was nevertheless still able to return to form in time for the season's end. Now he hopes for better luck.
"I’m simply hoping for a season with fewer prolonged setbacks, so that I can clock 50 to 60 race days and maintain a consistent training schedule in between. If that happens, things will get very interesting. I know that in races like the Amstel Gold Race, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Montreal event, or multi-stage races, there’s a chance to win".
A pure puncheur, he is able to perform on explosive races the best, specially when short uphill efforts are involved. This specificity and his consistency have seen him net a few leadership positions at Visma. "Beyond one-day races, a stage race like the Tour of the Basque Country—targeting the general classification—could be an option. It would be a fantastic experience to give that a try".
Barré aims for Tour de France role at Visma
But the Frenchman aims higher. Although he is not a Grand Tour specialist and should be cast as a domestique, he wants to take part in the Tour de France in 2027, and has already set the goal to prove himself ahead of it.
"I would really love to ride the Tour de France. Being part of a team like that would be amazing. The Giro and the Vuelta are more complicated, given that the Ardennes Classics take place just before the former, while the latter coincides with the races in Canada. Considering my profile and the types of races I enjoy, the Tour de France remains the best Grand Tour for me," he points out.
"I really want to take part. Being in an environment like that—even if it means working for the team—provides a completely different kind of motivation compared to anything I’ve experienced before".
