Team Visma | Lease a Bike would have known it was a tough task to try and wrestle the Maillot Jaune from a seemingly faultless Tadej Pogacar on stage 19. In the end, Pogacar showed again just how good he is at the moment, breaking the hearts of not only Jonas Vingegaard, but also Matteo Jorgenson in the process.
After starting the day in full out attack mode, sending multiple riders into the break for a potential stage win or satellite rider for a Vingegaard attack, Team Visma | Lease a Bike were pressed firmly onto the back foot on the final climb of the day as with around 9km to go, Pogacar launched another terrifyingly brutal attack, blowing Vingegaard out of the water in the process.
Although a third Maillot Jaune and the general classification was all but officially wrapped up by this attack from Pogacar, the stage win was still hanging in the balance for the UAE Team Emirates leader. At the time of Pogacar's move, Jorgenson was a lone leader, just shy of three minutes up the road.
Sadly for the American however, even this was not enough to hold off a rampant and ravenous Pogacar. With still 2 kilometres of climbing to go, the Slovenian caught and passed his American rival, kicking again clear and eventually gaining a further 21 seconds advantage by the team he reached the finish line.
Having put so much effort into not only this stage and this Tour, but just to even be present after injury in Vingegaard's case, emotions were understandably high for the Dane and his loyal teammate after such a tough to take finale to the day. After crossing the line, both Jorgenson and Vingegaard were consoled by their teammates and family, with the two time Tour de France winner looking notably heart broken.

It really is such a shame that Jonas, Primoz and Remco crashed at Itzulia Basque Country, and also that Sepp Kuss caught Covid and couldn't start the Tour. A healthy Jonas and Sepp would've made this Tour even more interesting than it already has been (and there's still the next few stages, including a TT final stage that could have a huge impact on the standings): We got to see Mark Cavendish break the record, Biniam finally getting his day in the sun, some incredible tactical racing between Tadej and Jonas in the first two weeks, Remco finally living up to the hype, Carapaz's fighting spirit finally paying off, emotional Bardet and Campenaerts stage wins, a controversial gravel stage that turned out to be quite an interesting tactical stage, the first ever finish not to be held in Paris... the list goes on.
Jorgensen is a step above from last year. Mas's devolution is probably because of Movistar
Hopefully next year neither Pogi nor Vingo get injured in the spring and we can have a fantastic rematch
He usually does but not when he spent a week in the ICU a few months ago. Also, if he had then you would have just said he was doping. We all know who you are and what takes you have.
Much admire Jonas for racing so well after that disaster of a crash earlier this year. Beyond the physical, it takes a lot of mental strength to do what he's doing. Matteo is also showing himself well this Tour and would be a solid teammate for any team.
Last year, Vingegaard won by over 7 minutes, with the same issue of a stronger team and his main competitor having an injury to recover from. His attacks were explosive and sustained, he was just dominant. This year, the situation is reversed, and Pogacar had the advantage of knowing this climb intimately from training here just a month ago. It seems that sometimes one person really can be that much better than the rest - until next year new circumstances occur and who knows what will happen.
Last year Pogacar collapsed. When that happens you can lose 7 minutes or 70. This year Pogacar is putting 15-20 seconds per km on EVERYBODY. I dont buy it. Imagine after 2020 there was no Vingegaard. Pogacar would match 5 Tours record with 25 yo. Even if it is real, it is terrible for cycling anyway.
