After the thrilling day of action on stage 16, stage 17 was decidedly quieter. Nevertheless, a thrilling finale and a three-way photo finish ensured there was still plenty to keep fans entertained.
With the general classification riders being allowed a relatively calm and quiet day, all the action was saved for the final few kilometres. Once the breakaway had been swallowed by the peloton with 5km to go, it was all about the finale and when
Michael Matthews became the first to open his sprint, he had looked good for the win. Sadly for the Australian though, both
Jonathan Milan and
Alberto Dainese came roaring round on both sides. In a three-way photo finish it was the Italian sprinter from
Team DSM that secured the win by a tire width.
