As the women's peloton embarked on the Bloeizone Fryslân Tour, Trek - Segafredo's Ellen van Dijk won the initial time-trial that saw inadequate safety measures as several times bikes, cars and even a van emerged on footage from the course.
The opening stage of the Bloeizone Fryslân Tour, previously known as Healthy Ageing Tour, in the Netherlands was won by time-trial World Champion Ellen van Dijk who put on a strong performance to take the lead of the racing, having beaten Jumbo-Visma's Riejanne Markus and Marlen Reusser. With two flat stages ahead, the Trek-Segafredo rider is in a good position to take the overall win.
The stage was marked however by the lack of safety conditions on the road. Although there was no report of an incident, throughout the broadcast it was visible that there were cyclists on the course that were not part of the competition, as seen in the video below. Furthermore, ProCyclingUK writer Matthew Mitchell who is covering the race has pointed out several moments where not only bikes were on a specific part of the course, but also cars, one of them being stopped next to the finish line where it posed extreme danger for the athletes.
