Mikel Landa produced a vintage climbing performance to win the queen stage of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana, attacking alone on the brutal Collado del Alguacil after a breathless day of racing around the Sierra Nevada.
The 36-year-old dropped Ramses Debruyne and Tobias Halland Johannessen with seven kilometres remaining before continuing alone to the summit. It delivered a remarkable late-season revival for a rider who had described 2026 as the worst campaign of his career and could have been riding one of the final Grand Tour stages of his career.
Van Aert launches frantic opening
Wout van Aert attacked alongside Ivo Oliveira immediately after the official start in La Calahorra, sparking an opening phase covered at more than 50kph.
Six Uno-X Mobility riders helped form a 14-man breakaway, while the speed and crosswinds briefly caught red jersey Enric Mas and Oscar Onley in the second part of the peloton. Movistar Team were forced to drop riders back to Mas and repair the damage before the first categorised climb.
The Spanish team then placed Raul Garcia Pierna and Ivan Romeo into an enormous counterattack containing more than 50 riders. That group also included Mikel Landa, Santiago Buitrago, Matthew Brennan and potential support for several of the leading GC contenders, but it failed to close on the original escape.
The front group took advantage and established a lead of more than 10 minutes. Pau Miquel beat Van Aert to the mountains points on Puerto de Los Blancares, but the Belgian responded by leading over the first ascent of Puerto de El Purche.
The opening half of the stage was also marked by crashes for Chris Hamilton and Matthew Riccitello at the same dangerous corner. Both later abandoned, leaving Felix Gall without one of his principal climbing domestiques.
Kuss and Carapaz attack from distance
Sepp Kuss opened the GC battle by attacking on theabat?first passage over El Purche with approximately 98 kilometres remaining. Richard Carapaz then produced a more forceful acceleration near the summit and bridged across to the American.
Decathlon CMA CGM Team increased the pace behind, dropping Mattias Skjelmose and Harold Tejada while leaving Mas isolated. Gall eventually took over the chase himself, bringing Mas and Primoz Roglic back to Carapaz and Kuss shortly before the summit.
Onley lost contact on the steepest gradients and was unable to return during the descent, placing his fifth position overall under serious threat.
Kuss attacked again on the second ascent of El Purche and this time established a sustained advantage. Carapaz repeatedly attempted to follow him clear, but Gall, Mas and Roglic continued to answer the Ecuadorian’s accelerations before allowing Kuss to move several minutes up the road.
Van Aert collected another 10 mountains points on the second El Purche and then won the intermediate sprint in Guejar Sierra, mathematically securing the green jersey ahead of Team Visma | Lease a Bike teammate Brennan. His attempt to overhaul Buitrago in the mountains classification faded when he missed out on the points at Puerto de El Duque.
Landa proves strongest on final climb
Landa successfully bridged from the earlier chase to the remains of the breakaway before El Duque. Debruyne also surged across and immediately increased the pace, with only Johannessen and Landa able to remain on his wheel.
The trio reached the foot of Collado del Alguacil with a commanding advantage over the GC contenders. Debruyne led through the opening wall, where the gradient briefly reached 22 per cent, but Landa soon took control.
The Basque rider attacked once to distance Johannessen and then accelerated again when Debruyne initially remained close. The second move proved decisive, with Landa opening a gap and steadily extending it across the exposed upper slopes.
Johannessen initially remained within 15 seconds before the advantage moved beyond half a minute approaching the final kilometre. Landa continued to climb out of the saddle before crossing the summit alone to complete his first victory of a troubled 2026 season.
Behind, Kuss approached the final climb with Van Aert and Jorgen Nordhagen after gaining more than five minutes on the principal GC contenders. That advantage moved him ahead of Onley into virtual fifth overall and brought the positions immediately above into play.
Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe increased the pace through Finn Fisher-Black as Mas, Roglic, Gall and Carapaz began the final climb around eight minutes behind Landa. Gall eventually attacked with 1.2 kilometres remaining and Mas crossed to him, opening a gap over Roglic and Carapaz before the Austrian edged several lengths ahead of the red jersey.
Landa’s victory provided a final major success before he leaves Soudal – Quick-Step to join ProTeam Euskaltel-Euskadi in 2027, with no guarantee that another Grand Tour appearance will follow.
