The
UCI has announced in a statement the sanctioning of
Patrick Lefevere for "derogatory comments towards women". The Soudal Quick-Step boss will be forced to make a public statement acknowledging his mistake or pay a fine of 20,000 Swiss francs.
UCI statement on Lefevere:
Following a report concerning Mr Patrick Lefevere, General Manager of the UCI WorldTeam Soudal Quick-Step, for public comments considered as disparaging towards women, the Ethics Commission confirmed that breaches of articles 5 and 6.1 of the Code of Ethics were committed in two instances. Mr Lefevere has been requested to make a public statement recognising the inappropriateness of his statements and apologising therefor. A fine of CHF 20,000 has also been imposed, suspended on condition that Mr Lefevere issues a public statement and does not commit a similar breach of the UCI Code of Ethics within the next three years.
He reminds me of Tiriac, only far worse
It'd be helpful to know what the comments were so we could judge for ourselves. Of course, we are just supposed to trust the UCI because ...reasons?
I think there is a reason why they don’t and it has to do with the conditions of the fine which only becomes active if his apology fails, i.e. they are waiting to observe how he apologises to judge whether he actually recognises what he did wrong and spelling it out for him would make it too easy to submit an answer pro forma.
All we know is it concerns 2 2023 incidents, so nothing to do with Marion’s role in Alaphilippe’s life.
My guess is:
1. women’s pay in pro cycling
2. consequences of women drinking
As a public figure he’s said a few things very stupidly, in a rather old-fashioned way which, surprise, surprise is what you’d expect from someone his age no?
Old people can be very selective about which societal changes they adopt.
The irony of hierarchy construction, relying on ageing men (more often than not white) to prepare the future for next generations.
Maybe it’s time to rethink our current methods (old men with young advisers) get younger leaders with older advisers. Good luck America ;-)
