Some heart-breaking news to share from the cycling world.
Belgian rider
Robbe Ghys, who rides for
Alpecin-Deceuninck, has shared the
devastating loss of his son, Zion.
In an emotional message posted to Instagram, the 28-year-old
opened up about the moment he and his partner had to say goodbye during
surgery:
“The moment when we rolled your bed into the surgery room.
Before we really could understand what was really happening doctors and nurses
stood around us. The heart breaking moment was here. Days, weeks and months
fighting for you, but nature decided this was the right choice to make.
“We knew already for a long time this could happen. But we kept fighting and
hoping we would never make it to this point. With all the care in the world I
stood hopeless next to your bed while the world beneath our feet collapsed.
“While the surgery was going well the background music was
on. John Legend all of me was playing. As if it was all planned out. We can be
so proud of ourselves that we kept believing in a good ending, you my love
stayed strong while I was fading away in tears watching everything unfold.
“For now Zion you will stay close to his brother in mom’s
belly while we keep fighting for our other son who is doing fine and is looking
healthy. I want to thank so many people who helped us to even make it this far
in our journey.
“Zion, our little boy. You will always have a special place
in our hearts and we will pass all the love to your two brothers.”
The thoughts of the entire cycling community are with Robbe,
his partner, and their family during this incredibly difficult time.
