Stage 5 of the
Tour of Turkey has been officially cancelled
due to extreme weather conditions, bringing an early halt to the day’s racing
after just 70 kilometres.
Even before the peloton rolled out, much of the route had
already been neutralised in anticipation of dangerous conditions. As the rain
and wind intensified, riders voiced concerns over safety, prompting organisers
to abandon the stage entirely.
The decision comes after similarly poor weather disrupted
Stage 4 on Wednesday, where adverse conditions were already on full display.
With no classification from Stage 5, there will be no winner declared for the
day.
Despite the disruption, the Tour of Turkey, celebrating its
60th edition this year, will resume as planned, with racing set to continue
through to Sunday.
Wout Poels remains in control of the general classification
following his impressive mountain stage victory earlier in the week. The Dutch
rider leads Martin Lopez by 23 seconds, with Juan Guillermo Martinez sitting 28
seconds back in third place overall.
