As Jumbo-Visma look to secure a historic Grand Tour hattrick at the Vuelta a Espana in the coming weeks, Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard is looking to double up and take a second straight three-week stage race victory.
"It's a realistic goal," Jumbo-Visma coach Mathieu Heijboer has now told Wielerrevue, however winning the Tour de France does not guarantee race winning form at the Vuelta a Espana. “There is a high risk factor here. We believe in preparing for a specific date and we did so before the Tour. If everything goes well, I dare say that he will be at his level."
Vingegaard heads up a two-pronged Jumbo-Visma attack at the Vuelta alongside Giro d'Italia winner Primoz Roglic. Pre-race it's fair to say the team in yellow and black are the favourites to take victory, despite the high level of competition coming from the likes of Remco Evenepoel, Geraint Thomas, Juan Ayuso and Enric Mas.
“For the Vuelta everything is somewhat uncertain because the preparation time was less," Mathieu Heijboer concludes. "On the other hand, we have already verified that this works with Primož and Kruijswijk."
