After brilliantly defending his gold in the Olympic Games mountain bike in Paris earlier this summer, Tom Pidcock returned to home roads last week at the 2024 Tour of Britain. Sadly for the INEOS Grenadiers star, he crashed out on the final stage.
With more information now revealed on Pidcock's condition following the incident, the INEOS Grenadiers have updated with some sad news. "Following the crash in stage six of the Tour of Britain we can confirm that Tom Pidcock has sustained a concussion," begins the statement by the team's official social media. "He will return home for recovery and remain under the supervision of our medical team whilst he follows our concussion 'return to training' protocol."
Whilst the incident not only ended his Tour of Britain campaign prematurely, Pidcock's hopes of end of season glory in North America have now been dashed. "Unfortunately this will mean he is unable to race in the upcoming Canadian races," reveal the INEOS Grenadiers. "We wish Tom a speedy recovery and hope he will be back to racing soon."
Pidcock wasn't the only rider injured in the crash either. Soudal - Quick-Step's Paul Magnier, winner of three stages in Britain last week also suffered a concussion as a result. "Paul Magnier was involved in a crash that forced him to say goodbye to the race whose bunch sprints he dominated. The Frenchman, who at that moment was wearing the red jersey rewarding the leader of the points classification, was immediately taken to the hospital in Ipswich for a series of investigations," they write in a statement. "Paul underwent a CT scan which revealed a serious brain concussion that requires him to spend the night in the hospital. At the same time, the 20-year-old suffered some serious abrasions to his elbow and knee that will need some stitching."
Thankfully for Pidcock at least, the British star is still expected to be present at the World Championships in Zurich.
