Tobias Foss admits he sprinted for bonus seconds that didn't exist at intermediate sprint: “Our sports director confirmed that five minutes later"

At the final intermediate sprint of the day on stage one of the Tour de Romandie, Tobias Foss rode clear at the front of the peloton, raising eyebrows for many. Now he has revealed that he believed bonus seconds were on offer.

Much to the confusion of race commentators and fans, Tobias Foss and his Jumbo-Visma teammate Thomas Gloag attacked the front of the peloton, riding clear to scoop up the points on offer at the intermediate sprint. “We had heard that bonus seconds could be won. That also went well, but none of the opposition did anything,” explains Foss post-race. "It may have looked stupid, but it's not a big deal."

Only following the collection of the points and after the pair had sat up and waited for the peloton was Foss informed that no such time bonus was on offer. "Casper Pedersen told me. That's why we checked with the team leaders and after five minutes they confirmed it. We admit our mistake honestly. And if you wear the sprinter's jersey, you should try it too," he laughs.

The stage was eventually won by Soudal - Quick-Step's Ethan Vernon and Foss's confusion wasn't the only eyebrow-raising moment of the day either as a group further back down the road was brought to a standstill by a t-junction after going the wrong way. “Other than that I feel good. I surprised myself today with how I felt, but take it one day at a time,” Foss concludes.
