55.548 kilometers was the distance Dan BIgham rode in 2022 and 56.375 was the distance Chris Boardman rode in 1996. Both these marks have been obliterated by Filippo Ganna tonight in Grenchen, Switzerland, as he rode a whole 56.792 kilometers in a single hour.
"I think this result is amazing. Today to arrive at this amazing goal is fantastic for me, and for all the staff who have worked for a long time to arrive at this result," Ganna said after his harsh effort. "This morning I thought to break the record by one metre. But in the end I said I wanted to do more."
In anticipation to the effort, INEOS and the Italian put in months of work towards preparation, which includes almost €100.000 in specialized equipment, put together with one of the most powerful cyclists on the planet and an unmatchable amount of planning and strategy around the event. Everything was set for the former World champion to beat Bigham - INEOS' performance engineer - record, and that was comfortably achieved.
A whole 56.792 kilometers have seen him beat Bigham's time with over a kilometer advantage, and it even saw him improve on the time of Chris Boardman, who set the - at the time - record in 1996 taking advantage of the lack of aerodynamical limitations that today exist. That barrier has been broken today.
However, Ganna has admitted that he may try to put in a new mark yet again. "I've put so much work into it. Next time maybe I’ll try in another part of the season with fresher legs and we can go higher again," he said, leaving fans with the dream of seeing him ride the 'Hour' once again.
"This result is amazing. Now I’m thinking about recovery and trying to celebrate together with everyone here," he concluded. He will be riding the World Championships on the track soon, and has had perfect preparation towards them.
