Luke Lamperti (Soudal - Quick-Step) was a big favourite to win the third stage of
Czech Tour with arrival to Ostrava - even more so since he has triumphed at the same place last year too. However the American sprinter launched too early on the city cobbles and relatively unknown
Liam Walsh racing for Australian continental team CCACHE - Bodywrap stunned everyone when he poked out of Lamperti's wheel to secure the biggest victory of his career.
"The guys protected me perfectly. They kept me well supplied with water in the heat, so I felt fresh coming into the sprint," said the Australian as he celebrated in front of the packed square after the podium ceremony.
"This is my second win in Europe, but by far the biggest of my career. Last year I won the one-day race Paris–Troyes, but this is different - a bigger race, tougher competition."
Despite not winning in Ostrava, Luke Lamperti remains in the lead of Points classification. And with one stage to go, only GC riders Junior Lecerf and Alessandro Fancellu can realistically aspire to overthrow the American who has a 12-point advantage over his Belgian teammate.
