As expected, Lidl-Trek seized full control over the Tour of Denmark with four riders in the final top-8 and Scandinavian duo Mads Pedersen & Jakob Söderqvist securing a one-two for the team. While Pedersen has also won three stages, his teammate from Sweden secured the best GC result of his young career. In a competition of seasoned professionals, Söderqvist who still rides for development team Lidl-Trek Future Racing showed that his move to WorldTour next year is more than deserved.
"It’s a dream," said second-placed Söderqvist in a team press release. "I think expectations could never be higher and we didn’t spend too much time painting them on the wall before the stage, we just said 'whatever happens, happens' and maybe we can make something good out of it. It wasn’t a clear plan, it was just being ready to improvise, and I don’t think it could have gone any better."
"It was just dream racing in the last half an hour. It was the perfect way to do it and I enjoyed it so much. This is something I will take a step back from now in the coming days and just enjoy. I think I am on a good path and I’m just trying to enjoy the journey I am on now and not stress too much about it."
Next to a time trial victory, Söderqvist also brings home a white jersey for the best young rider, underlining the dominance of Lidl-Trek which has only let the KoM competition slip between their fingers.
