Tadej Pogacar is without a doubt the strongest rider in the current pro peloton and there's plenty arguments you could use. In less than two weeks he will race for the rainbow jersey in Zurich... The World Championships are one of the few top races he has never won and he has got his best form ahead of another big goal that would add to a great season.
Victories such as Strade Bianche, Volta a Catalunya, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Giro d'Italia and Tour de France already make it impossible for anyone to match him this year. From Canada he takes another triumph at the GP de Montréal and has the opportunity to win the World Championships. “There’s not much you can do in the next two weeks. Maybe a few more long and intensive training sessions. But not too much. And then we’ll be ready for Zurich," he told Wielerflits after his Canadian triumph.
He will not race now until the race in Switzerland on the 29th of September (with Il Lombardia his final big goal of the season shortly after). Can he win? “There’s always a chance. Last year I also had a chance. In Glasgow I came third on a course that didn’t really suit me. This year the course suits me better. So yes, in Zurich my chances are better. But a World Championship is still a World Championship. Those are difficult to win.”
He will have to face the likes of Remco Evenepoel and defending champion Mathieu van der Poel who has lost weight in preparation for this specific race. But if he doesn't win, 2026 will be another opportunity, right in the city where he won this weekend: “2026 will be a good year for Montreal and Canadian cycling. I also hope that it will be a good year for me, but that is still so far away in the future. That is something for then. I prefer to live in the moment now.”
