Victor Lafay’s delayed start to 2026 has taken another turn, with the Frenchman once again forced to postpone his long-awaited return to racing as illness continues to disrupt his early season.
The
Unibet Rose Rockets rider has yet to make an appearance this year despite being scheduled for multiple opening races, with his programme repeatedly pushed back as he struggles to reach full fitness.
According to DirectVelo journalist James Odvart, the underlying issue is a virus, with Lafay described as “the victim of a virus contracted in China” that has seen him “continue to push back the start of his season.”
That explanation finally brings clarity to what had become an increasingly unclear situation. Lafay had been pencilled in for a series of early-season returns, only for each to fall through, leaving his campaign still yet to begin as the spring calendar moves on.
Ardennes Classics remain the focus
Despite the disrupted start, the longer-term plan remains unchanged. The priority is to rebuild Lafay’s condition gradually rather than force an early return, with the Ardennes Classics forming the central objective.
As outlined in the same report, the aim is to “gradually bring him back into condition for the Ardennes Classics, with La Flèche Wallonne in particular in his sights.”
Lafay has two Grand Tour stage wins on his palmares
That approach offers some structure, but it does not remove the growing pressure on his eventual return. By the time Lafay makes his debut, he will be doing so without the race rhythm his rivals have already established across March and early April.
For a rider whose recent seasons have been repeatedly interrupted, this latest delay only reinforces the sense of a career struggling to find continuity. The ability remains, but for now, the focus is far simpler: getting back to the start line and finally beginning a season that has yet to start.
