On the climb of Ściana Harnaś though, with around 50km to go, the leading trio got some company as Tobias Foss, Archie Ryan, Mick van Dijke and Tim Wellens all bridged the gap from peloton to breakaway, increasing the lead group's numbers to seven.
With 20km to go, the leaders advantage over the peloton was loitering just under a minute. On the penultimate climb of the day, Archie Ryan proved the strongest of the breakaway, although the peloton, that included the likes of Jonas Vingegaard, was only around 30 seconds down as the race headed towards the final rise to the line.
Into the final 3km however, things were beginning to look difficult for the Irishman as Ryan had just 10 seconds on the chasing pack. With 2.3km to go, Ryan was finally swept up. Around 30 riders were still in the peloton though, meaning a reduced uphill bunch sprint looked as if it was to decide the day.
With just over 1km to go however, Tudor Pro Cycling Team's Yannis Voisard launched an attack, but with around 300 metres to go, the Swiss too was caught by the bunch. In the end, it was that man again Thibau Nys, taking his 3rd stage win of the race who powered to victory ahead of
Diego Ulissi and
Oscar Onley.
