The Tour de France is the most important cycling race in the world and nothing is left to chance. At the time being we already know where the race will start in 2026 (Barcelona and Catalunya), 2027 (Rotterdam and The Hague)... One of the next Grand Departs may be in Slovenia!
“Yes, we are working on it. Ideally, we will organise the start of the Tour de France in 2029. That will of course cost a lot of money, but not as much as people think," chairman of the Slovenian cycling committtee Rok Lozej told TuttoBiciWeb.
This comes as a surprise of course because the eastern European nation has never before hosted the start of a Grand Tour, but more and more often the Giro d'Italia has been passing through it's roads. However, much due to the influence of it's stars of the present Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic, we may very well have the race start in the two-milllion habitants nation.
Slovenia gave birth to the riders who won every single Grand Tour in 2024, with Primoz Roglic winning the Vuelta a España, whilst Tadej Pogacar made history in many ways with an historic season that will live on for decades or more. All-in-all the country has the reigning Giro, Tour, Vuelta and World Champions so it is perhaps the year where they may have the most leverage to make their bid. Tadej Pogacar has a contract until 2030 with UAE Team Emirates - XRG and so it is virtually confirmed that he would be starting that Tour if nothing unusual happens.
However, Slovenia may organize it together with Italy, a plan that is very much on the table. “If the Tour were to start in Slovenia, we could agree with our neighbour to have one stage partly pass over these roads, as a tribute to this great Venetian champion,” he refers to the late Ottavio Bottecchia.
