Stage 14 proved to be the most crucial GC day so far in the Giro d'Italia, with an aggressive display from BORA - hansgrohe turning the race on it's head for several riders. Simon Yates overcame the heat difficulties to take a memorable stage win in Torino, as Richard Carapaz took over the race lead.
The start to the day was, once again, fast and furious. Several riders tried getting in the day's breakaway, however only in the first categorized climb of the day did a group go up the road. Iván Sosa, Joe Dombrowski, Alessandro Covi, Nans Peters, Ben Zwiehoff, Sylvain Moniquet, Diego Rosa, Filippo Zana, Diego Camargo, James Knox, Ignatas Konovalovas and Oscar Riesebeek got a gap, however that was abruptly cut just a few minutes later as three minutes evaporated in a matter of half an hour as BORA - hansgrohe raided the race.
With 80 kilometers to go the German team put themselves in front, causing splits in a descent dropping the likes of João Almeida, Thymen Arensman, Guillaume Martin and Alejandro Valverde. Whilst Almeida managed to get himself back into the GC group in the first ascent of the Superga, the remaining weren't as the breakaway was caught and Wilco Kelderman pushed the pace hard up the ascent.
The Dutchman pushed the group until the second ascent to Superga, where the attacks started. Several moves saw the group split, but reconnected towards the summit. Juan Pedro López defended himself brilliantly until Richard Carapaz attacked towards the summit, causing the race leader to drop off the back with the pink jersey's faith sealed.
Carapaz built his gap over the final meters of the climb, and kept it as Pello Bilbao chased in the group behind. In the ascent of the Colle della Maddalena, Jai Hindley bridged across to Carapaz, followed by Vincenzo Nibali and Simon Yates who formed the leading group over the final categorized climb.
There, Simon Yates made an explosive attack which didn't see an answer from the trio, and the Briton recovered to take his second win in the race, an important results just days after his GC win aspirations fell at Blockhaus. Jai Hindley and Richard Carapaz sprinted to second and third on the day, putting themselves as perhaps the main favourites for the race.
