Sarah Gigante’s season has come to a premature end after a
heavy training crash left her with a broken femur. The 24-year-old AG Insurance
- Soudal rider had been one of the standouts of 2025, with two stage wins at
the Giro d’Italia, third overall, and the mountains classification. She also
came within touching distance of the Tour de France Femmes podium, before
slipping to sixth overall after a brutal final stage in the mountains. The
injury means she will miss the upcoming World Championships in Rwanda and the
Italian autumn classics.
On Instagram, the Australian wrote, "I'm incredibly
disappointed that I broke my femur during training on Thursday (ouch!), but the
surgery went very well, and I'm already counting down the days until I can
finally ride my bike again. I was really looking forward to hopefully
representing Australia at the hilly World Championships in Rwanda and to
finishing my season in Italy. Fortunately, the four races I did ride this year
were successful..."
At the Tour, Gigante had started the final stage in second
overall, but her podium hopes disappeared on the descent of the Col de Joux
Plane. Reflecting after the finish, she said, “I got dropped quickly in the
technical, long downhill sections,” the Australian climber admitted honestly in
her post-stage interview after the finish, managing a tired smile despite the
clear disappointment. “I didn’t feel strong all day — it became a super hard,
lonely stage.”
The setback has cut short a season that promised much, but
her words make clear she is already counting down the days until she can return
to racing after an overall very impressive 2025.
