The Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenge brought the attention of many yesterday to the mountains, as several World Tour teams battled for an iconic win and UCI Points. EF Education-EasyPost thrived, as Ruben Guerreiro won the race after a blistering attack, followed by teammate Esteban Chaves.
“It's a big mountain, but the team worked a lot and believed in me. It's fantastic to take a win like that," Guerreiro said in a post-race interview. "I attacked after everyone did a great job. Everyone was part of this victory. Esteban was just behind me. It's special to have this win. We needed this," the Portuguese added.
With a first and second place, EF Education-EasyPost have taken 210 UCI points which take them to a little safer spot in rankings, splitting away from Team BikeExchange - Jayco. This will be a very important week as the peloton is simultaneously in several races at the same time, and Guerreiro was aware of how necessary the points were.
The Mont Ventoux is a climb that allows for early attacks in the steeper gradients, and in there Guerreiro showed he was the strongest in the day, attacking from the front group and arriving solo at the top of the mountain with a performance that was faster than the likes of Chris Froome in 2013, Jonas Vingegaard in 2021 or the Schleck/Contador battle in 2009
"We were unlucky this spring, but we kept training and we were persistent. Now we are ready for what is to come. I hope to be in the Tour selection," he concluded. Alongside Esteban Chaves he is showing great form and is a certainty for the Tour selection later on the in the month.
