INEOS Grenadiers have finished the sixth stage of the
Volta a Catalunya with only three riders but they have made the most out of what they had.
Richard Carapaz, in his traditional aggressive style of racing, has helped blow up the race early in the day and conquered what was one of the most thrilling GC raids in recent years.
"I'm very happy, we came with the idea of making a good Volta. It was a very hard finale, we were only two riders ahead," Carapaz said in a post-race interview. "We knew that today was a hard stage and we had planned to go all or nothing."
Sure enough, Carapaz went all or nothing on the opening climb of the day, attacking with teammate Luke Plapp and Sergio Higuita with over 130 kilometers to go. With very complicated terrain ahead, very complicated weather conditions and lack of teammates in the chasing group to help UAE Team Emirates, Carapaz' move proved successful and liften him from ninth to second place in the overall classification.
"My collaboration with Higuita. He was interested also because he was in front of me in the overall classification. Tomorrow it will be a similar day to today, all or nothing," he concluded.
Having 16 second back on Sergio Higuita, the Ecuadorian is very much within striking distance of the overall win, and will have the tricky Barcelona circuit to strike, but he will need to attack the race very likely.
