The junior men took to the road this morning in Kigali to contest the road race in the
World Championships and in the end of a dramatic race, Great Britain has conquered yet another gold medal. After Zoe Bäckstedt took the under-23 time-trial event, now
Harry Hudson has won the junior's road race.
This was a victory that came at the end of the 119-kilometer race and one from a brave attack. Hudson nailed the timing on his attack and had the legs to sustain it, moving away from the leading group with 36 kilometers to go and then maintaining himself in the front of the race as the attacks kept on coming in the chasing group. Javier Cublillas and Roberto Capello tried but did not have the legs to close the gap; later Benjamin Noval and Johan Blanc attacked in the penultimate climb and looked to be the duo that could close it down finally.
But away from the TV cameras, Noval crashed in a straight section of the course, killing his chances and leaving Blanc isolated and uncapable of shutting down the remaining 10 seconds. In the final climb Hudson still had the legs and kept a very high pace that allowed him to ride up to the finish in style and with a rainbow jersey awaiting him. Blanc outsprinted Jan Michal Kackowiak to take the silver and bronze medals.
