Nairo Quintana produced a vintage climbing display to win stage 2 of the 2026 Vuelta a Asturias, launching a decisive acceleration on the Alto de Carabanzo to drop Adrià Pericas and take a solo victory in Pola de Lena. The Colombian returned to winning ways on terrain that has suited him before, delivering a performance that puts him firmly at the centre of the general classification battle.
Starting in Llanes, the 140km stage immediately developed at a fierce pace. Early breakaway attempts were repeatedly shut down, with the peloton riding aggressively for much of the opening half, signalling that the day would be decided among the favourites on the final climbs.
It was not until 75 kilometres from the finish that a move finally gained any ground, as Danny van der Tuuk and Ole Theiler edged clear. Their advantage remained limited, never stretching much beyond a minute as the peloton kept them on a tight leash heading towards the decisive terrain.

Quintana delivers on Colladiella and Carabanzo to seal victory

The race came to life on the Alto de la Colladiella, where a sharp increase in pace split the peloton and triggered the first major move from the contenders. Adrià Pericas attacked, with Quintana the only rider able to respond immediately as the pair crested the climb at the front.
A regrouping on the descent brought together a select group of five riders at the head of the race. Quintana and Pericas were joined by Txomin Juaristi, Samuel Fernández and Diego Pescador, forming a strong lead group that worked effectively to build an advantage of over a minute on a reduced peloton behind.
The Alto de Cueña further thinned the group and made clear that the stage win would be decided between the strongest climbers. Quintana raised the pace once more, with only Pericas able to follow, leaving the remaining three riders unable to hold the wheel.
Behind the race, the peloton continued under the shadow of the tragic news of the death of Colombian rider Cristian Camilo Muñoz following a crash at the Tour du Jura, adding an emotional backdrop to the day’s racing.
The final showdown came on the Alto de Carabanzo. Quintana and Pericas began the climb together, maintaining just enough cooperation to keep the chasers at bay. But with around 7 kilometres remaining, the Movistar rider made his move. A sharp acceleration proved decisive. Pericas, after a sustained effort across the previous climbs, could not respond, and Quintana quickly opened a gap that would not be closed.
From there, the Colombian controlled both the summit and the descent into Pola de Lena, riding with precision to secure a clear solo victory. Pericas followed in second place, while Diego Pescador led the remainder of the chasers home. Quintana crossed the line to loud applause, sealing a commanding win that places him among the key contenders for the overall classification.
