Former UAE Team Emirates rider Cristian Camilo Muñoz has died six days after suffering a crash at the
Tour du Jura on April 18, following complications from a serious knee injury.
The Colombian, who rode for UAE Team Emirates between 2019 and 2021 and most recently represented NU Colombia, initially sustained the injury in the incident in France. His condition worsened in the days that followed, leading to hospitalisation after arriving in Asturias with his teammates. Muñoz underwent surgery in an attempt to stop the deterioration, but despite the efforts of medical staff, he was unable to overcome the complications linked to the injury.
The news has sent shockwaves through the peloton and the wider cycling community. As a mark of respect, his NU Colombia team withdrew from racing, choosing not to start the next stage of the
Vuelta a Asturias as they mourn the loss of their teammate.
When the race did resume, the atmosphere was subdued. Riders, staff and organisers gathered for a minute’s silence in his memory, reflecting the impact of the tragedy across the entire race convoy. Race officials also placed black ribbons on their vehicles as a symbol of mourning throughout the stage.
The Vuelta a Asturias continues under a cloud of sadness, with Cristian Camilo Muñoz remembered across the sport. Everyone associated with CyclingUpToDate would like to send our deepest condolences to the family, friends and all those who knew Muñoz.
