Magnus Cort Nielsen has won stage 2 of the 2026
Volta a Catalunya, the day that best suited the sprinters. The
Uno-X Mobility rider took an important victory, his first of the year and first at the World Tour level since the 2024 Criterium du Dauphiné.
The stage had a calm start, with a breakaway formation of five riders:
Baptiste Veistroffer and Liam Slock of Lotto - Intermarché, Samuel Fernandéz, Diego Uriairte and Julen Ariolabengoa. The group didn't seem to pose much of a threat to the peloton, which was mostly controlled by Dorian Godon's INEOS Grenadiers and NSN Cycling Team throughout the day.
The riders had a mostly flat day, with a slightly hilly final. However, with this being the best opportunity for the sprinters all week long, it was not likely that it was going to be wasted. However, there was the general feel that their work would be cut out, as the Lotto men in front were not going to make it an easy chase. The pace increased in the final hour, and soon enough, on the gentle climbs, breakaway specialist Veistroffer and Slock went off the front, dropping all of their group mates, finally with 19 kilometers to go.
In the peloton, there was tension, and a crash inside the final 10 kilometers saw pre-race contender Henri Uhlig crash; whilst the peloton split at high speed in the descent. Slock was left solo off the front with 3 kilometers to go. He was caught with just over 1 kilometer to go, before a technical finale where Uno-X had a man in front, leading out the uphill sprint.
Behind Ivo Oliveira came past with a lot of speed, but launching his sprint too early. The Portuguese champion had the power, but in the final meters of the stage, Magnus Cort Nielsen soared through to take a strong comeback win. Noah Isidore and Francesco Busatto rode to second and third on the day.
