Michael Valgren has won stage 5 of
Tirreno-Adriatico, one of the rare instances this year in which a breakaway has won in a top race. The Danish classics specialist has ridden himself into his first win since 2021. In the peloton it was a conservative race, however
Isaac del Toro attacked the final climb and managed to distance Giulio Pellizzari to take the blue jersey once again.
184 kilometers on the menu, a lesser distance than previous days however it was a tough day of racing with 3800 meters of climbing on the menu. A breakaway was formed with
Julian Alaphiippe, Edward Planckaert, Emiel Verstrynge, Joan Bou, Michael Valgren, Jack Haig, Georg Zimmermann and Sjoerd Bax.
The group moved through the hilly terrain that included plenty climbs. With 26 kilometers to go, on the penultimate lap of the stage, Michael Valgren attacked in front and was joined by Julian Alaphilippe. However, the Frenchman exploded on the bottom of the final ascent and Valgren went on to take the stage win for
EF Education-EasyPost.
In the peloton there were plenty opportunities to attack but no-one made a move before the final climb, with UAE Team Emirates - XRG doing most of the work throughout the stage to control it. Del Toro attacked in the first part of the final ascent, stopping but having seen Giulio Pellizzari struggle. The 2 seconds between the two meant that the race lead was up for grabs.
However despite hitting the wind early, it was evident that the Mexican had more legs and on the final ramp he attacked once again to distance the Italian. Del Toro sprinted to second on the day with Jorgenson behind, changing the overall classification once again.
