Isaac del Toro during stage 2 of the 2026 Tirreno-Adriatico
Stage 5 of Tirreno-Adriatico has delivered the biggest gaps of the race so far and although the day lacked big climbs in its decisive section, the fatigue from a long day with plenty ascents was enough for Isaac del Toro to make the difference after an attack late in the day. The UAE Team Emirates - XRG rider is back in the lead of the race.
Michael Valgren took the stage win but behind, the GC fight was controlled by UAE who looked to chase down the breakaway and prepare an attack for the Mexican throughout the whole day. On the final climb the Mexican made several accelerations and in the final ramp he finally dropped Pellizzari, riding into second place in the stage. With bonifications alone he would reach the race lead, but the 19 seconds on the road have now created a meaningful gap between the two.
Del Toro and Jorgenson distanced the competition, and the American is now third, 34 seconds behind the blue jersey - whilst Pellizzari himself is 23 seconds away from del Toro, a gap that is unlikely to be closed tomorrow on the queen stage.
Primoz Roglic has dropped down to fourth in the overall classification and is the last rider who is less than a minute behind del Toro in the overall classification - 44 seconds down. Giulio Ciccone, Tobias Johannessen, Alessandro Pinarello, Ben Healy, Magnus Sheffield and Santiago Buitrago complete the Top10, although a lot of positions are still expected to change during this Saturday's stage.
