Axel Laurance took his
second win of the week at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, sprinting to victory on Stage 4 in Valdobbiadene after the race came back together inside the final 15 kilometres.
The
INEOS Grenadiers rider was fastest from the peloton in a controlled finish, adding another victory to his Stage 1 success and reinforcing his place at the front of the general classification.
A three-rider breakaway of Filippo Agostinacchio, Matteo Spreafico and Emanuele Ansaloni shaped much of the stage, building an advantage of over three minutes earlier in the day. The gap was steadily reduced through the second half of the stage, with Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe and INEOS Grenadiers among the teams contributing to the chase.
After the climb of Combai, Agostinacchio and Ansaloni briefly remained clear, but the move was fully brought back inside the final 15 kilometres as the peloton regrouped ahead of the finish.
Late moves neutralised before sprint finale
There were attempts to disrupt the expected sprint, with riders including Andrea Pietrobon and Lorenzo Masciarelli attacking in the closing kilometres. However, none of the moves gained any lasting advantage, with the peloton remaining organised and quick to shut everything down.
A crash involving several riders inside the final 10 kilometres caused a moment of disruption, but all those involved were able to continue and it did not prevent a full bunch arriving at the finish.
Laurance delivers second win of the week
INEOS Grenadiers were visible at the front in the final kilometres, positioning Laurance for the sprint as the race headed into Valdobbiadene.
The Frenchman then proved the fastest in the dash to the line, securing the stage win from the peloton ahead of Mauro Schmid and continuing his strong run in this year’s race.
