UAE Team Emirates - XRG were the team that had the most responsibility at O
Gran Camiño and today on stage 4 they proved why. The Emirati team had
Adam Yates as the main favourite for the queen stage and the Briton delivered with what was his first win of the season.
The breakaway of the day was formed by Noah Campos, Lucas Lopes, Martín Rey, Diogo Pinto, Xabier Isasa and Andoni López de Abetxuxo. Three other riders joined in later on and on the first climb of the day, the long Alto Cabeza de Meda, Samuel Fernández moved off the front by himself with an attack coming with 52 kilometers to go.
The Caja Rural rider then led the race for a long period of time whilst behind Visma, UAE and NSN all worked to control the gap and set up for the stage win fight on the summit finish on the same climb - only through a different side, having 5 kilometers at over 9%.
The penultimate climb of the day saw some tactical racing, with the race leader's teammate George Bennett attacking, followed by Visma's Anton Schiffer, forcing other teams to work in the peloton. UAE worked and eventually went on to close the gap into the final climb, and there the short peloton quickly exploded.
The incredibly steep gradients, reaching on 20%, saw the riders almost create gaps between each other without a real attack. Adam Yates went off the front, not followed by Pinarello, whilst the gaps behind began to become significant. At pace,
Jorgen Nordhagen rode through his rivals and overtook Pinarello making him the provisional race leader, however with Yates growing a gap that would then become threatening - there were 16 seconds between them at the start of the day.
Yates rode to a solo stage win on the Galician mountain, taking the race lead as well with a gap of 45 seconds to Nordhagen who was second. Alessandro Pinarello still rode José Felix Parra off his wheel to finish third but already over a minute behind.
