Demi Vollering has had a near-perfect spring, winning the Setmana Ciclista Valenciana, Omloop het Nieuwsblad, Tour of Flanders and today Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes. The European Champion was the strongest on the climbs and put her stamp of authority in a peloton which she dominated in most climbing races this spring.
The race was hard from the start and there was no waiting for the significant moves to come. So as to put pressure on rivals, several teams attacked with meaningful cards early on, with the main teams covering each other. Elise Chabbey, Riejanne Markus, Niemke Vinke, Femke de Vries and Sara Casasola were briefly away from the peloton, although ultimately only Femke Gerrtise formed the breakaway of the day.
The Dutchwoman would be caught with 79 kilometers to go however and the fast pace in the peloton began to do damage as the riders would go through the climbs, with a few important names dropped before the real action began. Pauline Ferrand-Prévot was also briefly ahead of the peloton in an attack with around 50 kilometers to go, but the Côte de la Redoute was the main focus for most of the contenders.
A seven-rider group including the likes of Chabbey, Ruëgg, Squiban and Niedermaier was then also on the attack but was brought in at the base of La Redoute, where FDJ United - Suez took to the front to set up Demi Vollering, as had happened in previous races where the climbs made the difference. The European Champion then attacked with 34 kilometers to go, making the difference to the rest.
Katarzyna Niewiadoma, Puck Pieterse, Niamh Fisher-Black and Isabella Holmgren were initially in the chasing group over the summit with a gap that was closeable. But this would not be the case. The group lost firepower with Fisher-Black cracking; however it was the FDJ rider's pure power that would see her extend the gap gradually to her rivals.
On Roche-aux-Faucons the main chasing group would see a move from Paula Blasi, Elise Chabbey and Anna van der Breggen from behind. From these, van der Breggen jumped across to the first chasing group and then also dropped Holmgren.
Vollering took a solo win in Liège j
ust like Tadej Pogacar did in the men's race; whilst behind it was once again Puck Pieterse who sprinted to second place. Niewiadoma sprinted to third, taking the podium away from a strong van der Breggen who had made the late push.
