Remco Evenepoel is the headliner at this year's
Tour of Britain and the current double Olympic Champion delivered. The leader of
Soudal - Quick-Step was the strongest on the final summit finish at The Tumble and has won stage 5.
The queen stage of the race had a mostly flat start but the riders would face two ascents of The Tumble, a 5.5-kilometer long climb at 7.3%, the last of which coincided with the finish line. Frederik Frison, Rafael Reis, Patrick Boje Frydkjaer, Finlay Tarling, Henrik Pedersen, Noa Isidore, Baptiste Verstroffer, Axel Huens and Victor Vercouillie formed the day's breakaway, a strong one, but the peloton was in control of the situation.
In the first climb Remco Evenepoel once again proved his aggressive stance in this race, although the move didn't carry much success naturally so far from the finish. The high pace would create splits in the front group there however, and the same later on in the day before the final ascent. The break would be caught at the base of the final ascent, where INEOS Grenadiers quickly took control of the peloton. Remco Evenepoel launched an attack but proved unsuccessful, with Andrew August then making two moves.
The first serious attack came with 2 kilometers to go from Pavel Sivakov, followed by
Oscar Onley and Afonso Eulálio. But after putting on a chase, Evenepoel was then helped by Ilan van Wilder to close the gap inside the final kilometer. Bahrain - Victorious led the sprint in the group of favourites but Remco Evenepoel launched his sprint first and took the stage win, beating Visma's Tom Gloag and Oscar Onley.
