Remco Evenepoel soloed to victory on an emotional day at the
Tour de Suisse. Wearing the rainbow bands, Evenepoel honoured the memory of
Gino Mäder with a brilliant ride.
It was a sombre day at the Tour de Suisse as the race continued on in the absence of the late Gino Mäder. With a total of 37 riders opting against continuing, those who did, rolled along together for the majority of the stage.
As had been agreed, the racing truly began with 25km to go as the riders took on the Ottenberg climb.
With no time gaps being taken, many riders took it easy and quickly dropped out the back of the peloton.
Remco Evenepoel was the first rider to make a big move stick. Riding clear as a solo leader as the riders began to descend the Ottenberg.
Heading into the final 5 km Evenepoel's lead had stretched out to 46 seconds from a group of chasers.
With the win certain, the
Soudal - Quick-Step leader was visibly emotional as he pointed to the sky and to Gino Mäder.
