Remco Evenepoel left the memories of miserable Sunday at Liege behind in the stage 2 of Tour de Romandie. He commanded Soudal - Quick-Step teammates to turn up the heat on middle section, reducing the front group to just a little over 20 men. Ultimately, the battle for victory would play out without the Belgian, but it was good to see him back on attack.
"It was a successful day for us. We set a high pace and eventually we had someone in the leading group with Junior (Lecerf, ed.) and someone in the second group with me," Evenepoel told VTM NIEUWS after the race.
"It was great to see Lecerf fighting for the win. Everyone did their job and I'm glad I was able to sprint in the second group. We're now going to try to keep Junior in the top 10 of the general classification for as long as possible. I think the time trial on Sunday should suit him as well. I have to try to lose as little time as possible and try to get the best out of the time trial on Sunday. I think I can gain a big lead on the other favorites there."
Evenepoel is already looking positively towards the near future. "I don't want to celebrate too soon, but I have the feeling that the dip in Liège is over. I feel good and hope that I can continue to make progress." After Liege-Bastogne-Liege, there was a lot of backlash aimed at Evenepoel who simply picked a worse day, maybe a consequence of freezing out at La Fleche Wallonne few days earlier...
Tomorow, the olympic champion might be victorious again with a stage that starts in and later loops back to Cossonay. For Evenepoel, the final climb of 2.2 kilometers at 5.7% could be very interesting.
