Remco Evenepoel’s extraordinary 2024 has been capped off with another accolade as he is named Belgian of the Year. Already the recipient of the Kristallen Fiets and Flandrien of the Year awards, Evenepoel’s latest honour cements his place as a sporting icon in Belgium.
The 24-year-old had a ground breaking year, highlighted by his debut at the Tour de France, where he finished third overall, claimed a stage victory, and secured the young rider’s jersey. However, it was at the Paris Olympics where Evenepoel truly made history, becoming the first male cyclist to win both the road race and the time trial at the same Games. He also became Belgium’s first athlete in over 70 years to win two Olympic gold medals at a single Olympics.
In a team press release, the Soudal - Quick-Step rider shared his pride and gratitude for the recognition. “I am honoured to be named Belgian of the Year, it’s something that makes me proud. I worked hard the whole year to have these results and I am happy that I have been rewarded for all the sacrifices I’ve made with the wins I got and these trophies that came in the off-season. I have many people to thank for their support – my wife, my family, and my second family, Soudal Quick-Step.”
Evenepoel also reflected on the motivation he draws from these awards as he prepares for the upcoming season. “At the same time, all these distinctions motivate me to make a complete recovery as fast as possible and work even harder in order to be back at my best next season, when I hope to fight for some more important victories and make my countrymen proud, because as an athlete you do all these things to bring inspiration and emotion to the fans,” he added.
