After the Saudi Tour and before the UAE Tour comes a race that has had some history and very big faces contesting it, the Oman Tour kicks off tomorrow and has attracted a decent startlist. The good weather and interesting mix of stages makes it a desired early-season race for many, as the simple roads also keep the peloton safer than normal.
The route is a classic without any big surprises, however it is one that provides quite a lot of spectacle nonetheless. Firstly it must be pointed out that every single race in this area is prone to strong and exposed winds. The opening two days are sprinter days with no doubt, presenting the flat desert roads that the race has familiarized us with. On the third day of racing there is a hilltop finish in Qurayyat which will set some differences and show who is here to fight for the overall win and doesn't quite have the form, and on the following two days the race should be decided.
Stage four is only 119 kilometers long but features three ascents of the steep Al Jabal street before a flat finish, whilst the fifth day takes the peloton to the Green Mountain as it's known in English. The final day is open but should be for the sprinters, although late attacks can definitely succeed under the right circumstances.
The sprinters headline this startlist, which isn't as luscious as it has been on past years. Mark Cavendish will lead Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team and Fernando Gaviria will lead UAE Team Emirates. The likes of Mihkel Räim, Amaury Capiot and Kaden Groves will also be in contention for these.
As for the GC Fausto Masnada is the obvious name to point out as he seemed to strike gold with this startlist, he will have a lot of challengers nonetheless though with Rui Costa, Élie Gesbert, Rein Taaram¨äe, Anthon Charmig and Filippo Zana as the men to point out.
