With enough climbing to make most sprinters pass on this chance, yet without enough difficulties to provoke action between GC favourites, the sixth stage of Vuelta a Espana appears more than suited to be the first breakaway day of this year's race.
With a combination of strong time trial performance and stage win on Pico Villuercas, Primoz Roglic currently gets to once again enjoy the red jersey he's so familiar with. However that privilege comes with plenty of responsibilities and the Slovenian doesn't hide that lending the red jersey to a rider who isn't considered a GC threat could be one of the outcomes of today's stage.
"That is definitely an option," the Slovenian confirmed to Cyclingnews. "It depends on how the stage unfolds and who is in the breakaway. But it is definitely an option for Thursday."
The semi-difficult stage six to the Alto de las Abejas (9.3 km at 4%) seems on paper very suitable for attackers. "I don't know what kind of stage it is," says Roglic about it. "They say it's harder than the fifth stage. But it's definitely a good chance for the long breakaway to fight for the stage win," he concludes.
